Envoy to Ethiopia Flown to Israel After Suicide Attempt

By Ha'aretz

Israel's envoy to Ethiopia most probably shot and critically wounded himself in a suicide attempt, Ethiopian police said Wednesday. "There was no indication that other parties were involved in the injuries suffered by the ambassador," police said in a statement read on state-run television. The ambassador, Doron Grossman, was flown back to Israel and hospitalized in critical condition at Jerusalem's Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem. Grossman was found on Tuesday evening with a gunshot wound to the head in his hotel apartment in the capital Addis Ababa. His personal weapon was found in his hand. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said the shooting appeared to be a suicide attempt. Sources in Jerusalem told Israel Radio that Grossman, 48, was suffering from a debilitating disease.

Rare Historical Psychoanalysis of Hitler Available Online Israel News Faxx Sources

A rare 1943 document -- a psychological analysis of the personality of Adolph Hitler that predicted, among other things, his eventual suicide -- is now available on the Cornell Law Library's Web site, at: http://www.lawschool.cornell.edu/library/donovan/hitler/. The copyright to the original document -- number three of only 30 copies made -- was granted to the Law Library by Nina Murray, the widow of the document's main author, Dr. Henry A. Murray.

Henry Murray was a pre-World War II director of the Harvard Psychological Clinic and, during the war, served in the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner to the Central Intelligence Agency. The psychological profile of Hitler was among the papers discovered in the Law Library's Donovan Nuremberg Trials Collection. "It's almost a unique piece," said Claire Germain, the Edward Cornell Law Librarian and professor of law at Cornell Law School. "Posting it on the Web in pdf format makes it available to a broader audience and shows the uniqueness of the documents located at Cornell Library."

Murray was commissioned in 1943 to help the Allies understand Hitler's psychological makeup. He wrote that Hitler had a personality type stimulated by real or imagined insult or injury, that held grudges, had a low tolerance for criticism, an excessive demand for attention and a tendency to belittle, bully or blame others and seek revenge. But his personality also manifested persistence in the face of defeat, along with strong self-will and self-trust. However, Hitler lacked "the offsetting qualities that round out a balanced personality," wrote Murray. Murray guessed that if Germany were to lose World War II, Hitler might kill himself in a dramatic, explosive way, but he worried that Hitler might become a martyr if he were killed.

Murray himself was a controversial figure. Returning to Harvard after the war, he was involved in psychological experiments in 1959-62 in which a stress test was administered to unwitting student volunteers, including the young student Theodore Kaczynski. Kaczynski's lawyers in his trial as the Unabomber traced some of his emotional instability and fear of mind control to his role as a subject in those tests.

Vandals Desecrate Graves of Herzl, Ben-Gurion

By IsraelNationalNews.com

When the gravestones of the pillars of Zionism, Herzl and Ben-Gurion, are desecrated and disgraced by vandals, is Israeli society on the verge of falling into disarray? The gravesites of Zionism's founder and Israel's first prime minister were defaced and desecrated on Wednesday, in acts of outrage that might portend a deep-seated malaise developing in Israeli society.

In two shocking incidents that may have been unrelated, the tombstones of Binyamin Zeev Herzl and first prime minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, were smeared with graffiti. Ben-Gurion's tombstone in the Negev kibbutz of Sde Boker, where the elderly prime minister spent his final days, was sprayed with the word "Hitler" spelled out in Hebrew.

Edva Lavid, spokesperson for the Ramat Hanegev municipality said she was shocked by the vandalism. "I've lived in this area for 15 years and I don't remember anything like this," she said.

Herzl's tombstone on Mt. Herzl, the Zionist shrine that bears its founder's name, was sprayed with the words "neo-Nazis" and "Yossi Beilin" in Hebrew scrawl. Yossi Beilin is the head of the left-wing Yahad party. Beilin is also the proponent of the "Geneva Initiative" a proposal that would relinquish all of Judea and Samaria, as well as the Old City of Jerusalem to Arab control, an initiative that would require the expulsion of more than 250,000 Jews from their homes.

The vandalism on Mt. Herzl comes just as the Zionist Organization that Herzl had founded was preparing to dedicate a new museum devoted to Herzl at the site. Police say the two incidents appear to be part of a wave of politically motivated graffiti that is sweeping the country.

Chief New Immigrant Rabbi: Rabbi Yehuda Gordon

By IsraelNationalNews.com

The Jerusalem Rabbinate has appointed Rabbi Yehuda Gordon as "Chief Rabbi" for new immigrants, especially from the former Soviet Union. He has remarkable experience in finding recalcitrant husbands. The Rabbinate saw fit to make the appointment to help shore up religious services for the many thousands of new immigrants who have settled in the capital over the past few years.

Gordon, in his 60's, immigrated to Israel in 1965 from Lodz, Poland. As a member of Israel's Rabbinical Courts system, he has dealt with thousands of difficult divorce cases, and is credited with finding many recalcitrant husbands who refuse to give their wives religious divorce papers. He told Arutz-7 that he has traveled throughout Europe and Russia to find these men and convince them to sign the papers. He said that about two years ago, he had a particularly miraculous case:

"A woman from Gush Katif wished to marry a widower. She had once been married, however, in a full Jewish ceremony, to a man who remained behind in the city of Chernovsky in Ukraine. I called him on the phone to ask about him giving her a get [Jewish divorce]. He threatened to beat me up if I ever showed up at his door and to throw me out the window of his 6th-floor apartment.

"About two months later, I was in Chernovsky, and I brought my friend with me from Jerusalem, and with no prior notice, we made our way, with great trepidation, to the man's apartment. I knocked, and a non-Jewish woman opens the door, smiles nicely at us, says, 'Oh, rabbis, please come in.' The apartment was full of broken dishes, and the husband was sitting on the couch, nice and calm, but all scratched up. After a short talk, I brought out the papers authorizing us to issue a get in his name, he signed them, and I put them away. But I had to ask: 'When I called up last time, you threatened to throw me out the window. What happened?'

"He said, 'What happened was that last night, my wife here had a dream that I had two wives. She woke up in a rage, and demanded that I divorce the other one. I told her that I had already done so, and I showed her the civil divorce paper. She refused to accept this, and said, 'No, you have two wives,' and we have had this big fight since this morning... So when you came in, we knew that our problem was solved."

Gordon then continued, "We see what miracles God does in order to free a Jewish woman of her chains... I recently visited MK Tzvi Hendel in the Knesset, and he started to tell me about a close relative of his who had just married a woman only after a rabbi went to Chernovsky and convinced the former husband... I said that it was me, and we had a little dance in celebration..."

Fluent in eight languages, including Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, Polish, English, French, German, and Czech, Gordon's background is rich in rabbinical experience. He is, the author of many books on Jewish law and thought, Gordon has "open phone lines" in Russian, English and French for citizens to ask questions and discuss problems. The lines are temporarily inoperative, but he can be reached regarding agunah issues at "gordon11@speedy.co.il".
