Israel is sending military reinforcements to the West Bank after Palestinians retaliated against an Israeli missile attack that killed four people Tuesday.
Three of the dead belonged to the Islamic militant group Hamas, including a local Hamas leader. At least 10 other people were wounded in the attack by Israeli helicopter gunships on a building outside Bethlehem.
Israeli military officials said the Hamas members were planning a major terrorist attack during the Maccabiah games - the Jewish Olympics that opened Monday night in Jerusalem.
Shortly after the Bethlehem raid, Israel said Palestinians fired a mortar shell into Gilo, a Jewish neighborhood on the southern edge of Jerusalem. It landed in the backyard of a Gilo resident. One woman was lightly wounded.
Palestinians called the Israeli attacks on Hamas assassinations, saying Israel has killed 30 members since the latest weave of violence erupted 10 months ago. Israel said the killings are in self-defense, and that Yasir Arafat's Palestinian Authority is doing little to reign in anti-Israeli groups.
The Palestinian Authority condemned the Tuesday raid in Bethlehem and arrested five people suspected of helping Israelis. The military wing of Hamas is threatening a wave of suicide attacks on Israeli targets.

Israeli forces remain on high alert after a suicide bombing in Israel Monday prompted a retaliatory strike against Palestinian security positions in the West Bank. The suicide bomber killed himself and two Israeli soldiers: one male, one female, at a bus stop in northern Israel. Several others in this latest incident were wounded - one of them critically.
The suicide attack happened at a bus stop across from the train station in Binyamina - a small town north of Tel Aviv. The militant group Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack and identified the bomber as Nidal Shadouf, from a village near the West Bank town, Jenin.
In response, Israeli tanks fired at Palestinian security posts in Jenin and nearby Tulkarm. No casualties were reported.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's spokesman called the suicide bombing "There hasn't been a day, one day of quiet...The Palestinians were intent on counting the days of calm while we're counting our dead every day."
Some people have criticized the government for being too restrained in its battle against terror. There were reports last week Israel had developed plans for a massive military action to disarm the Palestinians reports which are denied by Israel. In an apparent reference to that sort of show of force, Government Minister Ephriam Sneh of the Labor Party - a former defense minister - said he was not interested in "fireworks," and said the army must focus on terrorists and those organizing them.

A Muslim family in New Zealand say they need to travel to Mecca to seek God's forgiveness after they ate bacon on their pizza. They are asking the company that sold them the pizza to pay for the trip.
Mohammed Sameem who runs a shop in the northern town of Hastings says members of his family have committed a serious sin and they have to travel to the Islamic holy city in Saudi Arabia to seek forgiveness for their sins. Islam forbids the eating of pork.
Sameem told Wellington's Dominion newspaper Tuesday that he was horrified to discover that the vegetarian pizza which he had ordered for the family was sprinkled with bits of bacon after they had eaten some of it.
He said he, his wife, mother, stepfather and stepsister must all go now to the holy city to be purified. He wants the pizza company to pay for his family's trip.
The pizza company apologized and offered Sameem a free pizza instead. But the shopowner said he has hired a lawyer to seek reimbursement for the family's planned trip next year.
