Hospital Staff: Ofra Chaza Died of AIDS

By IsraelWire

Singing star Ofra Chaza died as a result of AIDS according to members of the Sheba Medical Center staff in Tel Aviv, where Chaza was admitted in serious condition. Members of the staff stated the family of the pop star did not inform them that Chaza was contagious but this was confirmed when the results of blood tests were received.

Family members told Israelis that the star was suffering from complications from the flu but according to a report in the daily Haaretz, hospital staff learned of her true illness which led to a collapse of her internal organs and death on Feb 23.

Dr. Ze'ev Rothstein, Sheba's director, denied media reports that members of the medical team which treated Chaza were angered realizing the patient was infectious but they were not informed as per the request of the family. Medical staff at Sheba, according to Haaretz, stated tubes of blood drawn from Chaza were not marked as being contaminated until 48 hours following her arrival. This they explained compromised the safety of members of the medical team who were unaware of her true illness.

Rothstein stated that he and other hospital senior management did not receive even a single complaint, verbally or in writing, from any member of the staff treating Chaza.

Rothstein concluded that the hospital does not have the right to go into detail regarding the late star's condition since she stated upon her admission that she did not permit the release of any facts pertaining to her unspecified illness.

Ross' Mission Fails

By Meredith Buel (VOA-Jerusalem)

Diplomat Dennis Ross has failed to revive peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. Ross is returning to Washington for consultations with President Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, after failing to break the stalemate in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

He spoke to reporters after a meeting with Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat in the Gaza Strip. "We will decide on what the next best step will be to insure that this process of overcoming the difficulties actually succeeds. There is a very strong determination on our part to insure that this process, in the end, produces a result."

Ross has been shuttling between Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak in an effort to revive the negotiations. The talks broke down about one-month ago when Arafat rejected the latest Israeli transfer of 6.1 percent of the West Bank to the Palestinians. So far, Israel has not agreed to Palestinian demands that the handover include areas near Jerusalem.

Barak offered new proposals designed to break the deadlock, but Palestinian negotiators said they are not acceptable. Top Palestinian negotiator Yasser Abed Rabbo accused Barak of wasting time and indicated the talks will not resume.

"I do not think we are going towards resuming the negotiations again. All the suggestions we received are not consistent with the signed agreements. Their aim is just to waste time."

Israel's top negotiator, Oded Eran, blamed the Palestinians for the manufacturing the crisis which he described as totally unnecessary. Earlier this month, Israel and the Palestinians missed a self-imposed deadline for a framework accord on a permanent peace treaty.

That accord will focus on the most difficult issues facing both sides, including the borders of a possible Palestinian State, Jewish settlements in the occupied territories, the fate of Palestinian refugees, and the future of Jerusalem.

Israeli military and intelligence officials have repeatedly warned that violence could erupt if progress in the peace process is not made soon.

Is Hamas Experimenting with Chemical Weapons?

By IsraelWire

American and Israeli anti-terror experts have expressed concerns that the Hamas terrorist organization is experimenting with chemical weaponry. According to this week's U.S. News & World Report, fragments from a weapon tested by Hamas was found to exhibit traces of a "non-harmful" chemical substance. Anti terror experts are concerned that Hamas may attempt a terrorist attack involving non-conventional warfare.

Military experts also say Iranian Fajr 5 missiles, with a 42 mile range, can easily reach the Haifa Bay area if fired by Hizbullah terrorists in southern Lebanon. This according to a report in the daily Haaretz. Israeli officials have already informed the White House than Iran has moved the missiles to Lebanon, although at this time, they have not yet been placed in the hands of Hizbullah.

As Israel continues efforts to renew the peace initiative with Syria, Damascus continues to turn a blind eye as Iran supplies Hizbullah with more advanced weaponry to increase it offensive capabilities against IDF and SLA forces operating in the security zone of southern Lebanon.
