Israelis Enter Country Without Passport Control

By IsraelWire

In the midst of confusion caused by new construction in the Ben Gurion Airport, an Israeli couple managed to enter the country without going through passport control.

On Sunday afternoon, many passengers arriving in Israel had to wait hours outside the main terminal to go through passport control. Two young Israelis, returning from a vacation in Turkey, got tired of the lengthy wait, and began walking around the building. They arrived at a control point manned by security personnel and intended for use by airport employees only. Despite the fact that security rules dictate that everyone passing the control point has to show authorization, the two were let through without being checked. They continued on until they arrived at a point in the main terminal from which they could leave the airport.

The couple, realizing that they had managed to circumvent passport control, went to the information desk and told of how they had gotten into the country "freely." The two were questioned by security personnel and then were allowed to leave. The Airport Authority stated that no security breach had occurred, since all passengers undergo a security check before embarkation.

Sabbath Observant Crosswalk

By IsraelWire

Several "smart" crosswalks have been installed recently in Israel so that Sabbath observers can cross the street in safety. According to Rabbi Levi Yitzhak Halpern, head of the Institute of Technology and Jewish Law, the new crosswalks are permissible for Sabbath use.

The new crosswalks are equipped with sensors, and have signs stating: "This system was designed to permit Sabbath use." All the Sabbath-observant pedestrian needs to do is wait for a red light to turn on in the sensor, once every two minutes. In that way the sensor operates automatically, and does not need to be activated by human hands. All that is necessary is patience to wait two minutes, instead of risking life and limb by crossing against the red light.

Arab Stabs Jew in Jerusalem

By IsraelWire

An Arab from a northern Jerusalem neighborhood is suspected of stabbing a young Hareidi (ultra-Orthodox) man in the Bet Yisrael neighborhood of Jerusalem Wednesday morning and of attempting to stab another person in the area. The young man was lightly injured, and has already given his testimony to the police.

Four years ago, the same Arab tried to stab an IDF soldier at an army checkpoint, and was apprehended. Minister of Internal Security, Shlomo Ben Ami, stated that the Arabs have lately escalated organizing terror activities, due to their increased anxiety over what the PLO Authority (PA) calls "the state of the negotiations."

Father Beats Son for Making a Bad Cup of Coffee

By IsraelWire

A father has been charged with attacking, beating, and abusing his children, aged 16, 14, 11 and 5. The 11-year-old was once beaten by the father for getting a grade of 90 in school. A different son was beaten for a grade of 60.

The indictment, brought before the Tel Aviv District Court, claims that the 41-year-old father, from central Israel, has, for the past nine years, abused his children physically and emotionally. He once hit one of them hard in the head after he asked him to prepare him a cup of coffee, and the coffee wasn't to his liking.

The prosecution is charging the father with abuse of a minor by a guardian, and attacking a family member under severe circumstances.
