Designer of Website Calling for Barak's Murder Indicted

By IsraelWire

Omer Klingman, 20, was indicted Friday in Tel Aviv for establishing an Internet website inciting towards the assassination of Prime Minister Ehud Barak. On the "Death to Ehud Barak" site, the prime minister was referred to as a "traitor" and persons are informed that he must be ousted as quickly as possible. The site also made reference to the "Nazi-like" actions of the Barak government. Klingman, a member of the political left-wing, is believed to have established the website to discredit the right-wing nationalistic camp.

Lebanese Prisoners Released

By Ross Dunn (VOA-Jerusalem)

Israel has released five imprisoned Lebanese guerrillas, and signaled its intention to free at least 24 Palestinian prisoners. The moves are aimed at boosting confidence in Middle East peace talks. This will be the first time Israel has released prisoners accused of killing Israelis. Prime Minister Ehud Barak confirmed (in a statement) the release of five members of the militant Islamic group Hizbullah.

Zvi Rish, a lawyer representing most of the Lebanese prisoners held in Israel, says the five men include guerrillas who were captured more than 10 years ago. Israel has been holding the Hizbullah members in an attempt to win the release of Israelis captured in Lebanon. Three Israeli soldiers missing since the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 are presumed dead, but a fourth, air force navigator Ron Arad, who was shot down over Lebanon in 1986, may still be alive.

It is not clear whether Sunday's prisoner release by Israel will result in any action by Lebanese authorities. Israel still holds 16 Lebanese prisoners in what it calls "administrative detention."

In a separate action Sunday, Israeli officials said they will release 24 more Palestinian prisoners, including - for the first time - those accused of killing Israelis.

Barak has not yet discussed details of the Palestinians' release, but he said in a New-Year message to Israel's Christians that it was a "painful" decision to set free those who - in his words - "plucked the lives of others."

The release appears to have been motivated more by the Israeli authorities' desire to boost confidence in peace talks with Syria, and expected negotiations with Lebanon.

Study: Females Less Fit for Combat Units Than Males

By IsraelWire

A recent study conducted by the IDF medical corps has shown that most female bodies are not as strong and tough as male bodies, and, therefore, the study concludes that females cannot be included in a extensive draft into combat units. The study was conducted by physiologists from the Department of Army Physiology, who investigated the possibility of drafting females into combat units.

Among the results of the study, the researchers discovered that females of army service age have 25% fat in their body mass, compared with 15% in males. The females have half the upper body muscles that males have, and a third of the lower body muscles, resulting in females having 30-40% less physical strength than males.

In fitness, the females proved to be 8-20% less effective runners than the males. The longer the run, the larger the gap between males and females. This is due to the female's heart pumping less blood, which produces less oxygen for the muscles.

Female bones are smaller, less dense, and have thinner covering than males. Also, their different skeletal configuration, with a wider pelvis, and higher fat ratio, cause more strain on the skeleton, resulting in more stress fractures. For example, in a new course for female border police, 30% suffered stress fractures, compared with the 7% average for male soldiers.

According to the study, some females, especially those who are involved in sports before their draft, will be fit for combat units, and could be in better physical shape than many males, but females as a group are generally weaker than males. Therefore, the army probably cannot take all-inclusive groups of females for combat training, since the training is geared to the abilities of the average male.

Last Munich Terrorist Re-enacted Attack for Hollywood Movie

By IsraelWire

Arthur Cohen, producer of "The Garden of the Finzi-Contini's," and actor Michael Douglas, have secretly completed a film about the massacre of the 11 Israeli Olympic athletes in the 1972 Munich Olympics.

The production found the last living terrorist and interviewed him to receive the first-hand account of the events. According to the production, they were aided by former Israeli security personnel in finding the terrorist.

Of the eight "Black September" organization terrorists that took part in the terror attack, five were killed in the failed rescue attempt by German security agents in the airport near Munich. The remaining three were arrested, but were released after a "Lufthansa" airplane was hijacked by terrorists, who demanded the release of their comrades. Two of the three were later killed, by the Mossad, according to foreign reports. The third remained hidden until recently. The movie, entitled "One Day in September", was mostly produced in Britain, and will be premiered on January 18, 2000 in Los Angeles.
