Muslims Reopen Subterranean Al-Aqsa Chamber

By Ross Dunn (VOA-Jerusalem)

Muslim authorities have re-opened an entrance on the Temple Mount, the most religiously sensitive site in Jerusalem's Old City -- without seeking Israel's permission. But the Israeli government has refused to block the move despite strong objections from Jewish citizens who oppose Muslims gaining greater control over the area.

Muslim authorities confirmed (Wednesday) they have re-opened an entrance to a large underground chamber below the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Al-Aqsa is the third holiest shrine in the Islamic world after Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia. But the mosque is also a point of friction, being situated in the area where the Jewish Temple of Jerusalem stood in biblical times, nearly 2,000 years ago.

Jewish claims to the area are rejected by Muslims who say they do not need Israel's permission to make alterations in the compound.

The head of the Muslim religious trust in Jerusalem, Adnan Husseini, says the re-opened entrance leads to a 7th century mosque below Al-Aqsa, which is already being used for prayers and could accommodate up to 7,000 people.

He says the entrance is one of three and will be used only in the case of emergencies to protect worshipers during times of overcrowding.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has concurred with the decision. A spokesman for Barak says the new gateway is necessary for security reasons. But his stand outraged right-wing Jewish members of the Israeli parliament, including Benny Elon who have accused the Prime Minister of caving in to Muslim pressure. Elon says the decision means that Jews are losing their campaign against Muslims and Christians for control over religious sites in the Holy City.

Har HaZeitim: The Mount of Olives

With permission of Ohr Somayach Institutions http://www.ohr.org.il/

This famous mountain, referred to in the Talmud as Har Hamishcha (Mount of Oil), was where the Red Heifer was slaughtered and burned so that its ashes could be used in purifying Jews who had become ritually impure through contact with the dead.

Ironically, it is today most identified with the dead because its slope east of the Temple Mount contains the oldest Jewish cemetery in the world. It is on this mountain where the Redeemer's feet shall stand, says the Prophet Zechariah (14:1-4) in his vision of the climactic battle which will take place at the end of days when all the nations gather to make war against Jerusalem, and Har HaZeitim shall be split along the middle by a great valley running from east to west.
