26 Irish and Romanian tourists who arrived in Israel by ship from Cyprus are members of a Christian cult and will be deported without delay, police said Monday. Police spokeswoman Linda Menuhin said the cult had no ties to the Denver-based group Concerned Christians, whose followers were expelled from Israel in January amid fears they planned violent acts near holy sites. Israel fears that it will become a target for Christian doomsday groups as the millennium approaches. It has set up a special police unit to screen visitors and prevent cultists from passing through border controls.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak is appealing for an international campaign to fight terrorism, which he predicts will increase as progress is made in the Middle East peace process. Speaking to reporters in Jerusalem, Barak says there needs to be a world-wide fight against terrorism as the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians moves forward.
Barak says he is speaking from experience in predicting violence from such groups as Hamas and Islamic Jihad. "We predict that there will be attempts to torpedo the peace process by extremist elements."
Barak says attacks against Jews are likely both in Israel and in other countries. He called on all nations to take steps to make sure such terrorist attempts will not succeed.
The prime minister has warned repeatedly that terrorist attacks would seriously damage the fragile peace process with the Palestinians.

A top New Jersey legislator has joined the call for a pardon for Jonathan Pollard. New Jersey General Assembly Majority Leader Paul DiGastano wrote a letter to U.S. President Clinton last week, in which he noted that Pollard has been sitting in prison for 14 years, and "that no other spy for a U.S. ally has served more than 10 years.
"In light of the recent clemency given to 14 terrorists who were involved with a bombing campaign resulting in multiple deaths of innocent civilians, I believe that it would be reasonable, at this time, to re-consider the possibility of extending a pardon to Jonathan Pollard."
DiGastano noted that no loss of life resulted from Pollard's actions, that he was never indicted for harming the United States, or charged with treason. He added, "In order to spare the United States a potentially embarrassing, long, difficult and expensive trial, Mr. Pollard agreed to a plea bargain - despite which, he received a life sentence. I understand this to be a complete violation of the plea agreement he had reached with the government."

According to a senior aide to PLO Authority Chairman Yasir Arafat, a call to Prime Minister Ehud Barak on the hotline was necessary to prevent Israeli military craft from forcing Arafat's helicopter out of the sky.
According to PA official Nabil Shaath, the incident took place last week during a routine flight from Gaza to Ramallah. Shaath explained the flight was forced to turn back but following a call by Arafat to the prime minister, the situation was rectified. "There is no doubt on the start of a new relationship between our president and Mr. Barak. There is warmth spread all over," Shaath said.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, Fidel Castro has signed a deal in which 400 Jews were permitted to immigrate to Israel. The report indicated the move on Castro's part is to improve his image in Washington in the hope of a lifting of the economic embargo to assist Cuba's ailing economy.
The new immigrants are reportedly living in an Ashkelon absorption center and most of the students are now hopeful that their parents will be permitted to follow. Jewish Agency officials would not comment explaining they did not want to jeopardize the ongoing Cuban aliyah.
