Jordan's King Abdullah Calls Jerusalem "Occupied"

By IsraelWire

In a magazine interview, Jordan's King Abdullah stated, "Jerusalem is occupied and it should be returned to the Palestinian people."

According to the Jordan Times, the king did not specify if he was referring to the entire city of eastern Jerusalem, the portion of the city that was liberated in the June 1967 Six Day War.

Poll: Arabs Oppose Jerusalem as Israeli Capital

By IsraelWire

According to a recent poll conducted by the Jerusalem-based Jerusalem Media and Communications Center, 93.7 percent of the Arabs polled oppose Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in the final status talks between Israel and the PLO Authority. The poll was conducted prior to the August signing of the Wye-2 (Sharm el-Sheik) Agreement in Egypt.

The poll, conducted among 1,200 Arab residents of Judea, Samaria and Gaza indicated that Jerusalem will be the final obstacle to the signing of a comprehensive peace treaty between Israel and the PA.

About 48.9 percent of those surveyed said Jerusalem must be the capital of Palestine while 6.7 percent said the city should become an international city and 5.1 percent said it should remain unified as the capitals of two states.

The poll showed 44.5 percent of the Palestinians thought the "attention and care on Jerusalem" taken by the PA was "not enough," while 33.3 percent believed the PA gave "due attention and care" to the city.

Women to Serve in Combat Units in 2000

By IsraelWire

Women will serve as combat soldiers in the year 2000, according to a plan prepared by the Israel Defense Forces, the daily Ma'ariv reported. Female units will serve along the Egyptian and Jordanian borders. A top IDF official predicts that in a few years, women will handle the vast majority of border patrol duty.

These units will be highly selective and those chosen to them will receive extensive training for their position. Additionally, pilot tests will place women in armored and artillery forces.

The official stated that those women would "remain with their units even when based in Lebanon." The official added that female soldiers will be trained and responsible for the same duties as their male counterparts.

The Navy has also decided to place women in its diving repair unit. In the coming year, women will participate in shallow-water diving endeavors.

Dog Owner Sues Israel Electric and Tel Aviv Municipality

By IsraelWire

The owner of a Rottweiler that was electrocuted last year while being walked on Tel Aviv's Rothschild Boulevard is suing city hall and Israel Electric Company for NIS 109,000 in a Tel Aviv court.

In the suit, the plaintiff explained his dog was killed instantly when he touched an exposed electric cable that was not properly covered following work on the street.

The plaintiff's lawyer added that the dog prevented the death of a child or infant but the death was traumatic for his owner who explained the 3-year-old pet was a loyal friend, companion and escorted him wherever he went.
