Bar Mitzvah - The Sequel

Israel Faxx Staff Report

Henry Kleski had a bar mitzvah Saturday night in Columbus. Nothing unusual...except that he is 83. Traditionally, Jewish boys get a bar mitzvah at age 13, when they're considered a man. But it's also becoming more common for Jewish men to have a second bar mitzvah when they hit 83. The reason: an old tradition that a lifespan is 70 years. So, when you hit 83, it's kind of like beginning a new life.

Supreme Court Blocks Orient House Closure

By David Gollust (VOA-Jerusalem)

Israel's high court has blocked Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's effort to close offices at the PLO's unofficial headquarters at east Jerusalem's Orient House. The decision defuses tensions that could have led to violence in advance of Israeli elections next week. The decision touched off a fireworks celebration at Orient House by Palestinians who had feared an Israeli move to storm the compound.

The court suspended the closure until after the elections in response to an Israeli peace group's complaint that Netanyahu was trying to provoke a crisis to boost his campaign. That was denied by spokesman Moshe Fogel, who says Netanyahu has consistently opposed efforts to undercut Israel's control of the entire city.

Netanyahu accuses the Palestinian Authority of operating at Orient House in violation of peace agreements.

Sheinbein Trial Gets Under Way

By IsraelWire

The trial of Samuel Sheinbein gets under way Sunday in the Tel Aviv District Court. Maryland's Jewish community was shocked when the two murder suspects turned out to be two 17-year-old Jewish youths, Samuel Sheinbein and his good friend Aaron Binyamin Nadel.

.By the time the police discovered their identities, the teens had traveled to New York. Days later, Sheinbein's New York relatives furnished him with a suitcase of clothes and his passport. Sheinbein didn't want to return to Maryland, so his parents brought him to the airport and bought him a ticket to Tel Aviv. On September 22, 1997 he arrived in Israel.

Sheinbein's friend, Nadel, did not manage to escape. He was arrested and stood trial in Maryland for murder and conspiracy of murder. In April 1998, one day before his trial was due to begin, Nadel hanged himself in his jail cell.

In America, Sheinbein's father and brother testified in court that Sheinbein had acted in self-defense. Sheinbein tried to commit suicide by overdosing on tranquilizers, and was hospitalized in a facility for the mentally ill.

Israel has rejected the US extradition request due to its legal ramifications and Sheinbein will stand trial in Israel. Sheinbein will stand trial in Israel for the murder/dismemberment of Alfredo Enrique Tello, Jr., in Maryland.

Argentinean Court Blames Islamic Jihad for Terror Attacks

By IsraelWire & Arutz-7 News Service

According to the Argentinean High Court of Justice, the Islamic Jihad terror organization was responsible for the attack against the Israeli Embassy in 1992. The High Court also reported that despite some reports, there was no explosion inside the embassy complex but the attack was carried out using a large quantity of explosives placed inside a vehicle outside the complex. Twenty-nine persons were killed in the attack.

Recent evidence also points to police involvement in an attack against the embassy. A tape recording emerged that indicated police knowingly ordered security personnel from the bomb site minutes before the blast tore through the complex. The audiotape revealed that an unidentified police commander ordered guards away from the embassy area minutes before the blast.

The tape strengthens the theory of a tie between local police and Islamic terrorists who are suspected in another attack - the 1994 bombing of the Jewish cultural center in which 86 persons perished.

Physician Complains: "My Wife Brings Our Poodles to Bed"

By IsraelWire

"My wife refuses to throw our two poodles out of our double bed," a Haifa doctor told the Haifa Family Court.

The couple has been married 20 years and has two children. The wife recently filed for divorce, claiming that her husband left her for another woman. The husband countered that he was forced to leave the house because of the dogs that sleep in his bed. The wife neither denied nor confirmed the dogs' sleeping arrangements. The man also claims that his wife wasted all his money instead of using the money to study medicine. "She failed the exams nine times."

The doctor has asked the court to exempt him from paying alimony. The court recommended that the couple reach a compromise about dividing communal property.
