"We only accept children of one kind", was the explanation given to
little Ethiopian Jewish girls before they were thrown out of a
Netivot synagogue this past Sabbath.
The synagogue holds Psalms reading for children every Sabbath, and
two Ethiopian sisters, ages five and eight, who have participated
for two years, arrived as usual, but were told by the woman in
charge, Yaffa Shurki, that the rabbi told her not to let in anyone
"who is not Israeli."
Shurki explained that she has not allowed Russian immigrant
children to join for a long time, because of the difficulty of
determining who are Jewish and who aren't, and that she was
recently told by the rabbi not to allow access to Ethiopian
children.

Israel observed its annual Yom HaShoah, "Holocaust Remembrance
Day," Tuesday. Officials used this year's ceremonies to recall
the plight of Kosovo refugees.
Sirens sounded throughout the country, bringing Israel to a
standstill for two minutes in honor of the 6 Million Jews killed in
the Nazi Holocaust. Israelis stopped in their tracks. On the
streets, traffic came to an abrupt halt and motorists stood by
their cars.
At ceremonies at Yad Vashem Holocaust National Memorial in
Jerusalem, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made reference to the
plight of Kosovo refugees. For many Holocaust survivors, television
pictures of Kosovar refugees packed on trains and scrambling in
camps for bread have elicited painful memories of their own
experiences in World War 2.
Although Netanyahu said nothing could be compared to the Holocaust,
he said -- "As Jews, we have a special responsibility to remember,
understand, and act."
Israel has sent humanitarian aid -- including a field hospital -- to the Balkans to assist the refugees.
Netanyahu -- who has come under some criticism for his delayed expression of support for the NATO air campaign against Yugoslavia -- says his country will continue to help the refugees for as long as is necessary.

South Africa's government says it supports the right of the
Palestinian people to declare their statehood without any
restrictions. The statement of support for Palestinian statehood
was issued by South Africa's Foreign Affairs Department following
talks between President Nelson Mandela and Palestinian leader
Yasir Arafat.
It said South Africa established full diplomatic relations with
what was termed the State of Palestine in February 1995, an
act which the statement said dignified the Palestinian people
with the same right to statehood as the people of Israel. It said
South Africa continues to support the right of the Palestinians to
full and unrestricted self-determination.
However, earlier Tuesday, the South African press agency quoted
Mandela as saying he had advised Arafat at their talks Monday night
in Johannesburg to postpone his expected May 4 statehood
declaration.

Defense Minister Moshe Arens said Israel is aware that the Russian
government is continuing to supply the Iranians with advanced
missile technology. Speaking to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and
Defense Committee, the minister stated he is trying to send a
message to the government of Syria to take action to curtail the
continued Hizbullah attacks in the security zone of southern
Lebanon.
Arens stated he asked Under Secretary of State Martin Indyk to act
as an agent between Israel and the Syrians. The defense minister
told reporters, "It was time to call a spade a spade. They know
that we know they know they control all Hizbullah activities.
We expect the Syrians to restrain the Hizbullah."

Police are investigating the abduction and rape at knifepoint of a
13-year-old Beersheva girl, by a man who followed the girl into the
elevator of her apartment building and took her to the roof, where
he raped her.
The rape took place Sunday, when a man, about 40, followed the girl
as she walked home from school with a friend. The girls had noticed
the man loitering on a park bench before he began following them.
When the girl reached her apartment building and entered the
elevator, the man entered the elevator, and prevented her from
getting off on the seventh floor on which she lives. He then forced
her to the roof and into the elevator room, where he raped her.
The girl left the roof, and her condition was noticed by neighbors,
who called the police. She was questioned by a juvenile detective,
but her state of shock made her story unclear. She was then
transferred to Beersheva's Soroka Hospital for treatment.
