Israel Faxx Staff Report
Israelis will consume some 45 million hamentaschen (small,
three-cornered pastries filled with chocolate, jelly, and the like)
this Purim, a drop of 10% from last year. In honor of today's
holiday, the Chabad movement plans to distribute one million
"Mishlo'ach Manot" packages throughout Israel today. The
traditional commandment of "sending food from one person to
another" on Purim will thus be commemorated on a grand scale.

Israel says it is prepared to strike at more Hizbullah terrorist
targets in southern Lebanon after an Israeli general was killed
there Sunday.
Israel staged furious airstrikes and artillery attacks against
Hizbullah after the roadside bomb killed the general and three
other Israelis. But the activity ceased early Monday as officials
apparently waited to see if Hizbullah would respond by firing
rockets into northern Israel.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu discussed the situation with
his security cabinet and later told reporters Israel is prepared
to continue the fight: "Israel will continue the battle against
Hizbullah because they continue the battle against us. We have
our plans well laid out and our targets well chosen."
In a sign of easing tensions, the Israeli army rescinded orders
that had confined residents of the Lebanese border region to bomb
shelters for nearly 24 hours.

Israeli forces Sunday prevented the 9-year-old son of PLO Authority
security chief Hussein Tirawi from passing a checkpoint heading
into Jerusalem, where he was reported to be seeking medical
treatment.
According to aides of the senior intelligence office, the boy was
scheduled to undergo another session of ongoing therapy resulting
from an accident that took place three years ago. PA officials
allege the move was intentional, insisting the IDF soldiers at the
Jericho checkpoint know the boy and his mother.
Israeli officials confirmed the accuracy of the report, adding that
the mother of the boy did not have the necessary permit to allow
her and her son to pass the checkpoint. The Israeli government
spokesperson added that since the treatment was not a case
involving a medical emergency, the woman and boy were turned back
as per the regulations imposed during the closure early Sunday
morning.
Israel on Sunday morning placed a closure on all Arab residents of
areas throughout Judea, Samaria and Gaza, responding to
intelligence reports of planned Hamas terrorist activity in the
coming days. Senior PA officials insist the move was one aimed at
collectively punishing the residents of PA autonomous areas and it
was a sign the government was not interested in furthering peace
efforts in the area.

Moshe Abargil, the owner of the new "Drugstore 2000" in downtown
Jerusalem, has found an innovative method of circumventing the law
barring the opening of his store on the Sabbath. Supported by
members of the left-wing and anti-Orthodox community, Abargil vowed
to keep his store open for business on the Sabbath, despite
increasing protests by members of Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox
community.
One rabbi who spoke with IsraelWire said this was not an issue of
supporting or opposing the man's struggle to operate his business
on the Sabbath, but a clear case of following the law. The rabbi
pointed out that the law clearly states that the Jewish-owned store
may not operate on the Jewish Sabbath.
Abargil on Friday sold his store for NIS 1 (about 25 cents) to a
Muslim, bypassing the law barring his opening on the Sabbath. The
name of the man who purchased the store remains a mystery at this
time.

Fisherman John Jack, 35, was admittedly a little afraid when he saw
the eyes of the 550 pound hammer head shark Friday morning, off the
coast of Ashdod. Nevertheless, the veteran fisherman was not
deterred and he, with the assistance of his crew, brought in the
prize catch which measured about 10 feet.

A recent Health Ministry survey reveals that 40 percent of Israelis
are overweight. The survey further reveals that Israelis are
optimistic about their health: 71% reported that their health is
good, despite the fact that, besides the high percentage of
overweight, 15% suffer from high blood pressure, and 20% from high
levels of cholesterol.
The survey was conducted by the Health Ministry's education branch,
headed by Dr. Dov Tamir. A representative sample of 3,000 persons
age 18 and up took part in the survey. The survey results show that
28% of the women in Israel are overweight, and 12% are obese. Eight
percent suffer undernourishment. Among Israeli males 32% are
overweight, and 8% are obese. Seven percent of the males are
undernourished.
