Officials in the Israel Defense Force have announced that female
soldiers will, by Independence Day, be issued new hats -- which are
similar to the berets worn by male soldiers. The move is said to be
another step to tear down the walls of discrimination between men
and women in the military. In addition, female soldiers will not
longer be required to carry the IDF-issued pocketbook.

The latest opinion polls show that some Israelis are willing to
give Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu a second chance in coming
elections. But Netanyahu remains hampered by formidable challenges
within his Likud party, and from moderate and left-wing candidates.
When Netanyahu opened the newspapers Tuesday, he found -- for a
change -- a bit of good news. Yediot Ahronot, Israel's largest
daily paper, said its poll found that Netanyahu would get 62
percent of the vote in a primary contest for the leadership of his
Likud party. That compared to 23 percent for challenger Moshe Arens
-- a former government minister, ambassador and former mentor to
Netanyahu who announced Monday his quest for the Likud
leadership.
Also Tuesday, a poll published in Maariv found that the popularity
gap has closed between Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, leader of the
opposition Labor party. Until now, Netanyahu had been lagging
behind Barak.
But the prime minister is coming under a fresh wave of criticism
for his decision to loosen economic spending after two and a half
years of tight budgetary constraint. Opponents charged Netanyahu
with playing what they call "election economics" by trying to lure
new voters with pre-election special interest spending. Even the
non-partisan Bank of Israel governor, Jacob Frenkel, is warning
against increased spending ahead of elections. Netanyahu denies
that the plans are connected in any way with the May 17 vote.
Right now, Netanyahu may be more focused on Jan. 25. That's the
date when he is to face a primary election within his own party.
Netanyahu has been trying to cancel the primaries and instead have
a vote by Likud's Central Committee members, where he has more
supporters and would have a better chance for reelection.

British police have warned that the leader of the Denver-based
"Concerned Christians" cult, 14 of whose members were deported to
Colorado, may be planning attacks on Israeli targets in Britain.
Cult leader Monte Kim Miller, 44, who disappeared with around 80 of
his followers from the US last September, is believed to be
undertaking academic research in Oxford, the London Sunday Times
reported. The paper reports that special branch officers had told
Israeli diplomats in London that attacks planned by members of
"Concerned Christians" might be made to look as though they were
carried out by Islamic fundamentalists.
Miller's claims that he would die on the streets of Jerusalem at
the end of 1999 and be resurrected three days later led to concerns
he or his followers may trigger a battle with Israel security
forces.
Israel last Saturday deported 14 cultists, six of them children,
claiming they intended violent acts in the hope of hastening the
return of Jesus. Sources close to the investigation, however,
disputed the charge that violence was planned.

Four months ago, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the Sept.
17, 1978 Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt, the Israel
Government Press Office released a special report documenting
anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial in the official Egyptian press.
Egyptian officials responded by denying that the official Egyptian
media was anti-Semitic. Following are some examples of
anti-Semitism and Holocaust denial which appeared in the official
Egyptian press in recent months:
Al-Ahram, Dec. 8, 1998 (by Nabil Amar)
"Has there been any change at all in the personality of the fanatic Jew, as it has come to be known and described in the literature and heritage of most of the nations of the world? That is to say, has there been any development of his character traits after his state has been established and he has obtained international influence? For example, is there any difference between Netanyahu's traits, when he is negotiating with the Palestinians, Lebanese and the Syrians, and those of the money-lender from the play The Merchant of Venice?"
Al-Akhbar, Sept. 25, 1998 (by Wahya Abu Thawkra)
"The Jews invented the myth of mass extermination and the fabrication that 6 million Jews were put to death in Nazi ovens. This was done with the aim of motivating the Jews to emigrate to Israel and to blackmail the Germans for money as well as to achieve world support for the Jews. Similarly, Zionism based itself on this myth to establish the State of Israel. I continue to believe that the Holocaust is an Israeli myth which was invented to blackmail the world."
