Addressing a memorial service for fallen Shin-Bet Agent Noam Cohen,
who was killed several years ago in Ramallah, the former IDF
commander stated there was no possibility of Israel loosing a
military conflict if one would arise.
"A conventional threat does exist, but it is unlikely that it will
be used in the near future. There is no immediate threat of war,"
said Lt. Gen. (Res.) Amnon Lipkin-Shachak. The former commander
stated the nation must compensate the combat soldiers of the IDF,
who carry the burden of the nation's security on their shoulders.
Shachak also addressed a recent ruling signed by prominent members
of the rabbinical community, declaring the giving away of portions
of the land an act that is prohibited by Torah law. He called upon
the rabbis not to place soldiers and commanders in a position where
they may be forced to decide between the religious law and the army
command given them. He stated the soldiers have more than their
share of responsibility without having to engage in an internal
moral dilemma.

In an attempt to improve ties between Israel and the Diaspora, a
group of philanthropists have unveiled an ambitious project to
bring Jewish teenagers on all-expenses-paid trips to Israel.
Private donors, charitable organizations and the Israeli government are actively working to raise $300 million over the next five years to kick off the "Birthright Israel" project by 2000.
The money will be used to pay for airfare and 10 days of
educational
programs in Israel for any Jewish person in the world between the
ages of 15 and 26, organizers said. Charles Bronfman, co-chairman
of the Seagram Company who helped launch the project, said it was
his way of helping young Jews reconnect with their heritage.

Following last week's incident when a Lufthansa flight made an
unscheduled stop in Turkey to drop off a group of neo-Nazis that
were barred from entering Israel, the airline has refused to permit
another neo-Nazi to board a flight.
The head of a German nationalist extremist organization was
prevented from boarding a Lufthansa flight to Israel Monday after
the Interior Ministry announced he would be refused entry to
Israel.
The case began last week, when Joachim Siegrist, head of the group
"German Conservatives," was scheduled to head a delegation of 33
right-wingers to Israel. The group included Third Reich veterans,
young nationalists and senior representatives of the extreme right
in Germany. While the group's plane was in the air, Israeli
authorities informed Lufthansa that it would not allow the
delegation to enter Israel. Lufthansa landed the plane in Istanbul
and let the group disembark. Siegrist was not among the passengers.
Siegrist apparently decided to travel alone and made reservations
for the flight from Frankfurt to Tel-Aviv. Last Friday, Lufthansa
was informed by the Israeli Embassy in Bonn that "Siegrist is
trying to come to Israel on another Lufthansa flight Nov. 15. We
would like to emphasize that the Interior Ministry continues to
refuse his entry."
In light of Israel's statement, Lufthansa's legal department
informed Siegrist on Friday that he would not be allowed to embark
on the flight.

Erez Mor, 36, a resident of Paris who lost his ability to walk in
an accident six years ago, is now in Israel looking for a place to
live. "If you can get me back on my feet, I will clean up my
business here and return home, to Israel."
Mor spent the last six years in a wheelchair, and told doctors if
they were able to restore his ability to walk, he would return
home. He kept his promise.
Mor left for Europe following the war in Lebanon, over 15 years
ago. He became the manager of a successful restaurant in Paris.
About six years ago, he was involved in a serious motorcycle
accident which left him unable to walk. He had limited abilities in
one leg but the second one was totally unresponsive. He spent six
months in a Paris hospital following the accident.
About one month ago, while attending the wedding of a relative, he
was told about Dr. Doron Avraham. Avraham was described as a
neurosurgeon who has been known to work wonders. Having agreed to
undergo another surgical procedure, Mor has regained the ability to
walk and was promised that in the coming months, barring anything
unforeseen, he will be able to dance at the next wedding he
attends.
