According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, the nation's
population passed the 6 million mark in September. Of that number,
4.76 million are Jews. The report also indicated a growth of 1
million persons over the past 7 year, 59 percent of which was from
natural growth and the remainder from immigration. The 5 million
mark was passed in 1991.

Alleged World War 2 death camp guard Nada Sakic arrived back in her native Croatia after being extradited from Argentina to face trial for war crimes. Her husband, Dinko, had been extradited in June.
The frail 72-year-old, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, looked
confused as she walked down the aircraft steps supported by two
plainclothes police officers. She was taken to Zagreb county jail.
Sakic is alleged to have worked from 1942-45 as a guard at the
women's section of Stara Gradiska concentration camp, run by her
husband when Croatia was under the Ustasha regime, allied to
Hitler's Nazis.
Her brother was Maks Luburic, a leading figure in the Ustashe
government and commander of Jasenovac camp, where tens of thousands
of Jews, Serbs, anti-fascist Croats and gypsies died. The Ustashe
camps were as deadly as any run by the Nazis.
The charges against her are "torture, treating civilians
inhumanely, measures of intimidation, terror and collective
punishment of civilians in violation of international law," Hina
news agency said.
The woman who went by the Spanish translation of her name Esperanza
after she fled to Argentina at the end of the war had been kept
under house arrest in Buenos Aires. She has not been back to
Croatia since May 7, 1945 when she fled, the day before
anti-fascist partisan forces entered Zagreb.
A federal judge who handled the Croatian extradition requests said
hers was perhaps the most important extradition from Argentina in
history, and more significant even than that of ex-SS captain Erich
Priebke to Italy in 1994.
Her husband Dinko was arrested in April and extradited to Zagreb,
where pre-trial hearings are still taking place before he takes the
stand for a trial on war crimes charges. She described him as
"innocent as a breast-feeding baby" at the time of his arrest, a
claim which "sounded increasingly hollow given her own arrest and
extradition to stand trial for Holocaust atrocities," said the
Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Center in a statement.
"The time has come for both members of this criminal couple to pay
for their crimes," added Efraim Zuroff, the center's director who
submitted documents to the Croatian Justice Ministry regarding Nada
Sakic during a recent visit.
Dinko was a commander of both Stara Gradiska and Jasenovac camps
who had lived openly in Argentina for 50 years until his past was
made public in a television interview in April.
The trials -- which will be held separately -- will highlight
Croatia's ambiguous role in the Second World War. While it was
ruled by the Nazi-backed Ustashe, thousands of Croats fought in the
partisan forces. President Franjo Tudjman's desire for
reconciliation between the two sides has provoked controversy in
recent years.
Jewish groups pressed for the trials to be held in Croatia, as a
vital test for the country, though they have expressed concern that
some prosecution evidence may not be heard, as much of it is held by
Serbs living in Belgrade, in Yugoslavia.

The Jerusalem-based Eida Chareidit Rabbinical Court has issued a
proclamation banning the use of the Internet, even for commercial
use. It was reiterated that the ban placed on televisions is
still in effect as well. The rabbinical court also banned owning a
computer screen which is capable of being used to watch television.
