Vatican Says No Peace Without Jerusalem Solution

By IsraelWire

Vatican Foreign Minister Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran said the future of the Middle East could not be separated from the fate of Jerusalem. "There will be no peace in the Middle East unless a solution is found for the holy places and areas of worship in Jerusalem," Tauran said after talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. "We ask the international community for guarantees to preserve the holiness of these places."

Asked if the Vatican would recognize the Palestinian state Chairman Yasir Arafat has said he would declare in May 1999, he said it would follow the lead of the international community. When Moussa said he believed the question was whether the Vatican would take the initiative in recognizing the new state, Tauran replied that was not its practice. "We are not the first, in order not to exercise moral pressure on the others."

Chareidi Teacher Suspected in Ashdod Sexual Assault Cases

By IsraelWire

Police announced that a chareidi (ultra-Orthodox) man is in custody and is suspected of carrying out several attacks on girls between the ages of 4 and 8-years-old. Police add that he stands accused of sodomy in at least one of the cases.

The 31-year-old Ashdod resident is the computer teacher for all the victims and denies all the charges being leveled against him.

Police insist they have evidence tying the suspect to about 20 sexual attacks. The police add that some of the parents of the chareidi victims are hesitant to come forward and give police information or press charges.

Nazareth Man Dies on Phone While Speaking on Live Radio

By IsraelWire

A Nazareth resident died while on the phone to a radio talk show. 61-year-old Marcus Elias Samud, was speaking on the "Kol Rega" program. Host Chaim Hecht later stated he thought the caller was experiencing some difficulty speaking. Hecht explained that he asked the caller if he was okay, hearing his labored breathing, to which he responded, he was not feeling too well and decided to hang up the phone.

Hecht asked members of his staff to call back but there was no answer. The man's address was also unlisted, so attempts to dispatch emergency responders to the home of the caller were delayed, despite all the efforts by Hecht and his production staff.

When the address was finally found, an ambulance was sent and the decision was made to forcibly enter into the man's home when no one answered the door. Samud was found in cardiac arrest and efforts by paramedics to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Feds Sued Over Israel Spy Probe

By IsraelWire

An orthodox Jewish engineer at a U.S, Army tank plant has sued the Justice Department, claiming federal agents exercised religious bias in a spy investigation. The government dropped a 10-month investigation of David Tenenbaum in July, saying it found insufficient evidence for an indictment. He had been placed on leave and had his home searched on suspicion of spying for Israel.

Tenenbaum, 40, of Southfield, Mich., filed a lawsuit in Detroit federal court seeking $120 million from the Justice Department and several officials. "My concern is David's orthodox faith may have made him a target," said Tenenbaum's lawyer, Martin Crandall. "This is ethnic-orientated persecution."

The Defense Department and FBI began investigating Tenenbaum in 1997. The FBI said at the time that Tenenbaum may have released information on armor systems, Patriot missile countermeasures, Bradley fighting vehicles and Humvees to Israel.

Holocaust an Issue in NY Race

By IsraelWire

Republican Charles Schumer, the Jewish Democrat running for Alfonse D'Amato's Senate seat, said the three-term incumbent is using the Holocaust for political gain. Schumer was responding to a campaign appearance D'Amato made with the Holocaust Memorial, near the United Nations, as a backdrop. D'Amato recounted his efforts at winning a settlement from Swiss banks for the return of assets to Holocaust victims and their heirs.

"I'm proud to have been there fighting every day, making a difference for justice for those who have been stonewalled," said D'Amato, who was accompanied by two Holocaust survivors and a rabbi. "My opponent...does not care...He's not there on the battlefields because he was too busy attempting to (further) his own political career."

Later, Schumer responded: "I think it's a shame that Al D'Amato would stoop to using the Holocaust for political purposes...My record on the Holocaust, on Jewish issues, is second to none."

Recent polls show D'Amato and Schumer in a virtual dead heat. Most Jewish organizations say both men have excellent records on issues such as Israel and the Holocaust. While polls show a majority of Jews support Schumer, D'Amato has more support among Jews than do most other Republicans running for office.

Psychiatric Jumper Sues the Hospital

By IsraelWire

A diagnosed 30-year-old psychiatric patient is suing the Abarbanel Psychiatric Facility after he survived a leap from an eight-floor structure. The patient maintains that doctors had diagnosed his condition and were well aware of his need to attempt to commit suicide.

Having made several attempts to take his own life, including intentional overdoses of prescription drugs, the patient was repeatedly hospitalized in Arbarbanel in Bat Yam. In his suit, he contends that the physicians should have done something to prevent his attempted suicide by jumping from the 8th floor. As a result of the fall, he underwent several surgical procedures and was listed as in need of a 100% disability rating.
