for the dollar now stands at 4.311 shekels. The Labor Party has
initiated a Knesset debate on the issue scheduled for Wednesday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hardline supporters
threatened Thursday to topple him if he cedes land to Palestinians
at a U.S. summit next week that aims to close a long-delayed peace
deal.
"If the prime minister keeps to the path, we will stay with him. If
he doesn't, he will have to step aside and clear the way for
someone better - and the public will have to decide," Jewish
settler leader Uri Ariel told Israeli army radio.
The United States announced President Clinton would host Netanyahu
and Palestinian Chief Yasir Arafat near Washington next Thursday to
try to close a land-and-security deal ending a 19-month-old peace
deadlock.
Though the U.S. administration hopes the conference will continue
until an agreement is signed, Israeli law obligates the Prime
Minister to address the opening of the winter Knesset session which
is currently scheduled for Oct. 19.
The announcement of the Washington summit triggered a series of
reactions from groups opposing further Israeli territorial
concessions. The Council for Jewish Communities in Judea, Samaria,
and Gaza will be sending a delegation to the site of the talks --
the Wye Plantation Conference Center in eastern Maryland.
The remotely-located and well-secured conference center will be off
limits to journalists thereby preventing direct contact with
members of the negotiating teams. A Yesha Council spokesman stated
the council's intention to "utilize the platform of a pool of bored
journalists" to advance the notion of Israeli territorial
integrity.
Leaders and members of the Chabad/Lubavitch chassidic community are
increasing their activities to oppose the policies of the Netanyahu
administration and have undertaken to topple the government should
it announce its plans to move ahead with the planned 13.1 percent
withdrawal from areas throughout Judea and Samaria.
At a gathering Wednesday night, Chabad leaders called for action to
topple the government. "Netanyahu is dangerous for the Jews," is
the new slogan, a turn around from the Chabad election campaign
slogan which read, "Netanyahu is good for the Jews."
The Chabad movement, followers of the late Rabbi Menachem Mendel
Schneerson, oppose any territorial compromise in Israel in
accordance with the teachings of the late rabbi. Schneerson warned
that negotiating to give away portions of Israel would lead to
bloodshed and it is prohibited under Torah law.
A group of 50 Christians, touring areas throughout Judea, Samaria
and Gaza, are opposed to US efforts to pressure Israel into an
agreement that will result in a 13.1 percent withdrawal. "That used
to be a great place to visit until Arafat turned Jesus into a
Palestinian," stated Sandra Oster Baras, the director of the
Christian Friends of Israeli Communities, as the bus traveled on a bypass
road that circumvents Bethlehem, Jesus' birthplace.
"I am very distressed at the thought that someone like Madeleine
Albright with the stroke of a pen is willing to just draw an X
through any of the communities in Judea and Samaria," she said.
Oster Baras, an observant Jew and resident of Samaria, is actively
working with Christians who support the Jewish presence throughout
Judea, Samaria and Gaza."
"It's by biblical prophecy that they should be here. It's all part
of the end-time scheme, that the Jews must return before the
Messiah will come," said Eric Friss from South Africa.

The delivery of an unidentified woman's seventh child in Sefat
started out as a regular delivery. As the infant's head was
visible, the delivery team, headed by a midwife, realized the
infant's shoulders were too large to come out. The midwife began to
manipulate and pull the infant in an attempt to complete the
delivery.
Suddenly, the team was in shock when they realized the midwife
ripped the infant's head off the body while attempting to complete
the delivery. The mother was immediately taken to surgery, where
the dead body was then surgically removed from uterus.
She was later told the baby died in birth, and the dead body was
wrapped in a sheet, with the staff not even informing the woman
what had transpired. She later found out from members of her
family.
Due to pressure exerted by the family, both the Ministry of Health
and the hospital have ordered investigations into the incident.
Dr. Klein Shapira, deputy director of the Rivkah Ziv Hospital, acknowledged that something had taken place, but refused to comment on the reported decapitation. Yair Amikam, a senior Ministry of Health official, confirmed the incident however.
The family has already announced it intends to file criminal
charges against the delivery team and the hospital.
