No IDF Soldiers in the Oasis Casino

By IsraelWire

IDF soldiers serving in the Jordan Valley area were informed they are barred from entering the PLO Authority-run Oasis Casino, in the Jericho area. Commanders of troops serving in the area of the casino gave the order barring soldiers from entering the casino. In addition, the IDF is currently investigating if it has the authority to bar off-duty and career soldiers and officers as well. Reservists and other soldiers serving in the area of the casino were told that violators of the order would face disciplinary charges.

Jordan Monitoring Dimona Nuclear Facility

By IsraelWire

After reports in the Israeli press claimed that Israel's nuclear reactor in the Negev desert was posing a threat of radioactivity in the region, Jordanian officials said daily tests "have not found any abnormal nuclear radioactivity" in Jordan.

"The measurements are in the normal range," Minister of Water and Energy Hani Mulki told the Jordan Times. "We are following up the issue with concerned parties to keep monitoring any possible changes in areas near the reactor."

Israel's Dimona reactor, south of Hebron, is about 36 miles west of Karak across the Jordan Valley. It was built over 40 years ago and is capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium. Press reports have said that Israel has built between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads at Dimona.

Although Israel has never officially admitted having nuclear weapons, it agreed in August to drop its opposition to the launch of United Nations negotiations on banning production of nuclear weapons materials, on condition that it would not be forced to accept international inspections of its nuclear facilities.

Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres virtually acknowledged that Israel possessed nuclear weapons during a visit to Jordan in July. "We built a nuclear option, not to in order to have a Hiroshima, but to have an Oslo," Peres told an audience of academics and the media in Amman July 13.

Migratory Birds Meet Death in Ramat Gan

By IsraelWire

Migratory birds, flying over the skies of Israel at this time of year, have met with a new mortal danger: they don't discern the glass panels used on the outsides of new, tall, office buildings in the greater Tel-Aviv area, crash into them head on, and die.

Dan Alon, head of the Israel Society for the Protection of Nature's Bird Division, has said that this is a known danger for birds in various parts of the world, but is new to Israel. He explained that some birds are deceived by seeing their own reflection in the mirror-like glass, and attempt to attack, striking the glass. Others see the sky reflected and fly straight into the glass walls. Certain countries, among them Switzerland, Germany, and the United States, have taken to affixing pictures of predatory birds to the glass as a deterrent.

Yigal Amir Withdraws from Outside Influences

By IsraelWire

Yigal Amir, convicted killer of Yitzchak Rabin, held in the highest security cell in the country, has intensified his immersion in studying, and has waived his rights to walks in the cell yard, television and daily newspapers.

Sources close to Amir's family stated that Amir is close to his first completion of learning all of the Talmud. His jailers were surprised to discover that Amir awakes nightly at 1:30 a.m. and studies until sunrise, when he begins morning prayers.

Amir recently began to forgo his once-a-day walk in the cell yard on Sabbath and holidays, out of concern that the opening of the electric cell doors would cause Sabbath desecration for the jailers (although most of the jailers are Druze, not Jews).

Almost the only communication Amir has with the outside world is a telephone call with his parents each evening. He does continue to receive many letters.

Doctors: Mineral Water May Prevent Hypertension

By IsraelWire

According to physicians, drinking bottled mineral water in place of tap water may prevent hypertension, high blood pressure. Doctors seem to feel that the lower level of sodium in the bottled water may significantly reduce the risk of hypertension, associated with many factors, including an excess of sodium.

According to Dr. Barakat Pollack, of the Wingate Institute Department of Physiology, and physicist Avraham Kobalsky, the lower sodium water may play a more important role than many realize.

According to the two researchers, the daily demand for sodium in the Western world and Israel has reached a level five times the recommended daily sodium requirements.

The study points out that despite the need for sodium in our diet, the excess is most definitely a contributory factor to hypertension, problems affecting the kidneys and other underlying illness.

The two point out that an inactive person drinking 6-8 cups of water daily, will ingest about 20 times more sodium drinking tap water in place of bottled mineral water.
