IDF soldier Shimon Ben Simon is bringing his case to the High Court
of Justice. The air force technician, who is serving his compulsory
military service, enrolled in the Ben-Gurion University bachelor's
degree program for a degree in engineering without obtaining IDF
approval.
Ben Shimon maintained that he was trying to advance his education
and career, and was doing so on his own time. His attorney
stipulated that the IDF may not demand that a soldier obtain
permission to attend a school on his or her own time.

Though Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts have been stalled for more
than a year, some cooperation programs continue. Mona Awsraf was
working in a kindergarten in the dusty, poor Gaza city of Khan
Yunis, when she heard about an opportunity to go to Israel and
learn more about her profession. She says she had her doubts --
and fears -- at first, but now, she says, everyone here is friends.
This classroom is at Shuval, an Israeli kibbutz collective village,
about six miles from Gaza. Today 11 women from Khan Yunis are here,
learning modern teaching methods from Israeli experts. The
lecturers speak Hebrew -- and students speak Arabic. The translator
is from Rahat, the Israeli Arab city across the street. That is
how the kibbutz got started with this -- by training kindergarten
teachers from Rahat. It was an easy transition to teaching
Palestinians from Gaza, says program director Atara Ron.
"Once we heard that more than 55 percent of Palestinian children
under the age of six are on the streets, all the fences fell and we
felt we had to do something."
Her counterpart in Gaza is Nafez abu Abdo, who heads the
international Palestinian friendship club for children in Khan
Yunis. He organized the group that comes to Israel every two weeks
for training. He says in poverty-stricken gaza, practically
everything is in short supply -- so teaching methods must be
simple.
"We haven't got many computers, so they can use hand games or
something like that, or making posters, or making games for
entertainment for the children."
In Khan Yunis, about half the kindergartens are run by the
sometimes violent Islamic fundamentalist "Hamas" movement. Israeli
officials charge that Hamas uses the kindergartens for extremist
indoctrination. Abu Abdo says he invited Hamas to take part in
this project, but was turned down. He says some of the teachers
studying at the kibbutz may end up teaching in Hamas kindergartens.
"i don't think about whether they belong to Hamas or another of the Palestinian parties. We deal with all the parties, because they are all part of the Palestinian society and we should deal with them."
There is a break in the classroom work as everyone celebrates a
student's birthday. The atmosphere is friendly, calm. Samira
Kowji is here with her daughter--they hope to open a professional
kindergarten together. She says, we are here to learn from the
experts. We want to learn, in order to take this knowledge and
develop our country and our children.

A man who feared his wife was being disloyal to him, hired the
services of a private investigator, who in turn installed a hidden
camera in the couple's bedroom. To the man's dismay, the film
showed his wife in bed with three men at one time. The man decided
to leave his home, explaining that his wife betrayed him as well as
Jewish law, and he was no longer able to live with her.
The wife, who was summoned by her husband to a rabbinical court,
denied the allegations and refused to accept a divorce from her
husband. Her husband told the judges that he will bring the video
tape to the next hearing.

A family of seven, who were having a great time going through the
duty free shops in Ben-Gurion International Airport, were shocked
when they realized one of their children was left in one of the
stores.
After the family completed all the security and other inspections,
and made themselves comfortable on the El Al flight to Paris, did
they realize they were short a family member.
The family members began to panic once they realized what had
happened and called a member of the flight crew to delay the
flight. A call was immediately placed to the El Al officials in the
Ben-Gurion terminal, and El Al security and other employees began
searching for the missing family member.
The missing child, a young girl, was found in good spirits, sitting
in her carriage in an electronics store. The young girl was unaware
anything was wrong and seemed unable to understand what all the
fuss was about.
