North Korean Missile Test

By IsraelWire

North Korea has raised missile development to a new level with Monday's test of its new Taipo-Dong missile, which has a range of over 1,200 miles.

According to Ze'ev Schiff, senior Haaretz military correspondent, if North Korea deepens its relations with Iran and Arab countries, such as Libya, and sells long-range missile technology, this will endanger not only the countries of the Middle East -- including Israel -- but Europe as well.

Schiff reports that Japanese sources say that this is a new Taipo-Dong missile, the first model of which is meant to reach a range of 1,200 miles, while a second model is to reach 1,555-1,866 miles.

Initial reports indicate a possible mishap during the test, since the missile flew approximately 240 miles and deviated from its trajectory towards the Russian port of Vladivostok. If the North Koreans actually succeed in developing the missile, they will not only threaten South Korea and Japan, but other neighbors as well, reports Schiff. It is doubtful if Russia and China will view this in a positive light.

North Korea's best known ballistic missile, the No-Dong, has a range of 600 miles. The missile was last launched in 1993 and also landed in the same stretch of water in the Sea of Japan, which separates Japan from the Korean peninsula.

The Pentagon and American intelligence services are examining whether the inter-continental missile was actually meant to fly on this trajectory in Japanese air space. The Americans say that there is a possibility that it was erroneously fired this way, due to North Korean inexperience in launching missiles. Japan does not accept this hypothesis, and it told the Americans that it considers it a provocative act.

Officials assess that the missile gives North Korea the capability to threaten not only adjacent areas, but also to reach targets in Central Asia and Alaska. The missile can carry a nuclear warhead.

In advance of the Clinton-Yeltsin summit today in Moscow, the Americans are emphasizing North Korea's developed export activity to various countries, such as Pakistan and Iran.

The United States wants to discuss with Russia ways to limit even further the transfer of missile technology to Iran, which cooperates with North Korea. The Americans believe that Russia could have a direct influence on North Korea and Russian cooperation on this matter is important, since the two countries share a common border and had close relations during the Soviet era.

Iran Refuses Visas for Israeli Wrestlers

By IsraelWire

Iran has denied Israeli athletes the right to enter Iran in order to participate in the world championship for free-style wrestling.

An Iranian newspaper reported that the athletes will not receive visas, despite calls by the World Association for Wrestling that the Iranians grant visas to all the athletes, regardless of their nationality.

The report also stated that two Iranian wrestlers announced they will not compete in a Greco-Roman wrestling tournament in Sweden, in protest of the participation of Israeli athletes.

Police Use Laser Technology to Eavesdrop

By IsraelWire

A Police Department senior officer admitted in a Beersheva courtroom that the department possesses technology permitting eavesdropping via laser technology instead of the standard placement of hidden microphones (bugs) in a home.

The unidentified officer said the use of the technology is limited, explaining that in most cases, the police are able to obtain the necessary orders permitting the placement of hidden microphones. The bugs deliver a much high quality recording of voice than the laser technology.

The issue was publicized during a hearing in District Court involving members of a gang accused of conspiring to injure another person. In that case, police used hidden microphones to obtain recorded conversations. The defense counsel argued the police planted the hidden listening devices without permission from the court, therefore making the recordings illegal.

Police then explained the recordings could also have been obtained using the laser microphone, which has the capability of sending its beam through the closed apartment windows, and transmitting the conversation going on in the room. Experts brought into the court by the state testified that a good quality laser microphone can pick up conversations hundreds of yards away.
