Physician Rescued from Golan Minefield

By IsraelWire

A rescue force was deployed to save a Hadassah Hospital physician, who went hang-gliding and landed in a Golan Heights minefield. Dr. Kalman Guitin, the director of the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit, landed in a minefield due to an unspecified problem with his glider. The doctor injured his leg but did not move about, for fear of setting off a mine. After several hours, the doctor was rescued and transported to Haifa's Rambam Hospital.

Yad Vashem Demands Removal of Auschwitz Crosses

By IsraelWire

Yad Vashem in Jerusalem officially demanded that Polish authorities immediately remove crosses that have been erected at Auschwitz by extremist groups. A letter was sent by the Yad Vashem Directorate to Polish President Alexander Kwasniewski, the prime minister and the chairwoman of the Polish Senate.

"This provocative act is a violation of the agreement of understanding reached between the international bodies, according to which, no religious, ideological or political symbols would be erected on site. Over a million people were murdered in Auschwitz and did not receive a proper burial. It was agreed that the site would continue to serve as a memorial and that only a museum for educational purposes would be allowed to remain there."

Bob Kunst, President of Shalom International, accused the Poles of anti-Semitism in its handling of the site. At the spot, where 50 Jewish children were burnt alive, Kunst described this as an attack on the Jewish community, survivors and victims of the Holocaust by trying to "Vaticanize" the Holocaust. He said that this incident is compounded by the plans to add banking, fast food and postal services at the world's largest Jewish cemetery.

"We are demanding that this holy ground and Jewish cemetery be turned over to the Jewish community. If this doesn't happen then we will mount an international campaign of boycotts and demonstrations against Poland." Demonstrations are planned for New York on Sept. 6 and in London and Paris on Nov. 8.

Chief Rabbi: Sabbath Desecration for Kenya Rescue Permitted

By IsraelWire

Responding to an article in the Agudat Yisrael-run HaModia newspaper, Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau said the desecration of the Sabbath by the Israeli rescue team preparing to respond to Kenya was permitted. The ultra-Orthodox-run newspaper condemned the Sabbath desecration. Lau explained that the Torah permits such action, even requires it, even when dealing with non-Jews or a doubt of a life-threatening situation.

The rabbi added that his teacher, the late Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach said in our day and age, the requirement for assisting a non-Jew in a life-threatening situation is even more prominent. He explained that the electronic age has enabled our linking the world and in a case such as the terror victims of the US Embassies in Eastern Africa, the entire world would be made aware that a specialized Israeli rescue team did not go because of the Sabbath, since they did not see fit to violate it for non-Jews. Lau stated that he learned this was not the case and the law requires a Jew to do what is necessary to save anyone on the Sabbath, Jews or Gentiles.

A Nairobi newspaper "Sunday Nation" reported three Arabs were seen photographing the U. S. Embassy building in Nairobi four days before the explosion. The witness to the photographers reported what he had seen to embassy guards, who disregarded the information.

Flatow Family Moves Ahead in Legal Battle Against Iran

By IsraelWire

Due to the efforts of U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton, the parents of Arab terror victim Alisa Flatow will continue with their efforts to seize Iranian assets.

A US federal court ruled that the terror attack in Gaza in 1995 was indeed backed by Iran, and the Flatow family, whose daughter was killed in that attack, was awarded a settlement of $247 million, monies to come from Iranian assets.

The Justice Department claimed that the Iranian assets are still protected by international law and treaties and it moved to block the liquidations of Iranian assets as part of a settlement in the terror bombing case.

Once the bill passed the House of Representatives, it gave the green light for Steven Flatow to move ahead. The bill prevents any Justice Department interference.

As a first step, it is expected that some land parcels in Washington DC which are owned by Iran will be targeted for liquidation. These properties are estimated to be valued at $8 million, and are marked as a first payment in the settlement.
