In an unprecedented statement, former prime minister Shimon Peres
has admitted that Israel "built a nuclear option, not in order to
have a Hiroshima but an Oslo."
Prior to Peres' statement, no Israeli leader has made any public
statements admitting to Israeli nuclear capabilities. "We thought
the reason that Israel was attacked five times was because some of
our neighbors thought they can overcome us."
He concluded that he believes if not for it [the nuclear option],
we would not have Oslo. The former prime minister made the
statements during a press conference in Jordan, following his
meeting with King Hussein.

According to Labor Knesset member Ephraim Sneh, the chairman of the
subcommittee on the IDF, the situation existing today, vis-à-vis
the readiness of the IDF, is "catastrophic."
Sneh added that NIS 20 billion would have to be allocated over a
four-year period to the IDF if it was to rehabilitate itself. He
made special mention of the unacceptable level of preparedness that
existed in the Home Front Command, and its ability to deal with an
attack using non-conventional warfare.
The Home Front Command has responsibility for protecting the
citizens in the case of an Iraqi missile attack or any other
non-conventional threat that endangers the general population of
the country.
Sneh, quoting unidentified IDF sources, said that he was told the
situation now was as critical as it was on the eve of the October
1973 Yom Kippur War.

According to Ma'ariv, Germany is sending information forms to
recipients of reparations from the German government, asking
persons to indicate if they live in a community located in Judea,
Samaria or Gaza.
Ma'ariv reports that some recipients are concerned that the German
government is planning to cancel payments to those persons living
in a Yesha community.
The questionnaire is being sent from the German Embassy in Israel,
to those persons who receive their reparations payment via the
embassy. Section 15b of the questionnaire asks, "Are you a resident
of the territories administered by Israel?"
Yesha activists stated they suspect the question is tied into the
decision made by the European Union to boycott products
manufactured in Jewish communities throughout Yesha.
Ma'ariv stated that a senior officials in the German diplomatic
corps in Israel stated that the form is unknown to them and it did
not originate from them. The official added the German government
would not ask such a question and has no intention of stopping any
reparations payments to any residents of Yesha.

The Beersheva Magistrate's Court imposed a sentence of community
service on a 43-year-old man, who married two women. The man was
first married in 1982, but after several years the relationship
fell apart and he left the home. Three years ago, he married again,
without telling the new wife that he was still married to the first
woman.
When the first wife found out about the second wife, she filed a
complaint with police and the case was also referred to the
Rabbinical Court, which compelled the man to give a divorce to his
first wife.
